Standard 5
Teachers know how to manage a classroom.

The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

Evidence 1: Use of Studywiz to manage Health Occupations classroom Studywiz login page

Rationale 1: The Studywiz that I use in conjunction with my face to face Health Occupations class is at
http://studywiz.lacrosseschools.org . Students have personal laptops in order to have access to this online learning environment. I post ebulletins for all students to read. I also can message individuals in my course or all students throught this system. The most used areas in studywiz are the discussion board, the assignment area and the elocker. Here the students are able to communicate and collaborate with fellow classmates. Students are also expected to submit assignments via the online assignment venue.

Knowledge 5.K.3 The teacher knows how to help people work productively and cooperatively with each other in complex social settings.

The students in the Health occupations class meet offsite of their respective highs schools. The students are all juniors interested in careers in Healthcare. Class meets 4 hrs a week but only 1 day a week is spent face to face while the other 3 hrs are spent on field trips/labs. Through studywiz, productivity online is possible. Students from each school must collaborate together to produce a personal and group summary, power point and thank you note.

Skills 5.S.3 The teacher organizes, allocates, and manages the resources of time, space, activities, and attention to provide active and equitable engagement of students in productive tasks.

Due to the time constraints of this college-like class schedule, I must organize and allocate all online materials to be easily accessible and uploadable. The major tasks of the group work is divided equally among the group so that all students ar actively engaged in the activity at hand.

Disposition 5.D.4 The teacher recognizes the value of intrinsic motivation to students’ life-long growth and learning.

I believe I model the motivation necessary for life long learning and growth.

Everyday I try to inspire students, make them laugh and relax a little to realize that life long learning is fun. I hope that students see the positive attitude and happiness I have for life long learning and how I incorporate it into my daily teaching so they can positively charge their own lives for a love of learning and life.
